It Is What You Say! by Wanda Whitley

Words.  What a difference they make.  What power we hold with our words.  We can lift someone up or tear them down.  Unlike physical injuries and scars which eventually heal, a blow meted with words can remain with one forever.  This is why it is so important to carefully consider the impact our words are going to make on someone’s life.

Remember Thumper, in the Disney movie Bambi?  Words of wisdom from his sweet mother, reminding him of instruction he’d been given from his father just that morning – “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all”.  We have instructions from our Heavenly Father as well.  His Word tells us to love others as we love ourselves.  We also have been given what is known as the Golden Rule.  Matthew 7:12 says to do unto others as you would have others do unto you.  Did you know the power of our words can bring life or death?  Proverbs 18:21 confirms this.  So dear sisters, we can lift each other up, or tear each other down.  It is so much better to speak to people with love and kindness than it is to crush someone’s spirit.  I had an employee at a previous job that her goal each day was to make someone smile.  As receptionist at our office, she came into contact with many people every day.  Before that “unsmiling, grumpy” person left our office, she did have them smiling, leaving with a light that they did not arrive with, a light lit with love, by kind words from someone they didn’t even know.

In a world full of pain and division, consider this – what if we are the only ones that have been kind with our words and actions to someone on any given day?  What if through our loving words, a hurting heart and broken spirit can be eased and encouraged?  What if we are the ones that make a difference to a person who is on the brink of giving up?  What if we are the ones that lead someone to Jesus?  This is our commission!  Share the love of Jesus through loving others.  Let our words be full of love, be life-giving!  I will close today with this; I had a very dear Pastor who has since went home to Heaven that used to sing a song called “Thank You for Giving to the Lord.”  In this song, it speaks of people in Heaven we will meet that are there because of a word of love and encouragement that we said to them while here on earth, that eventually led them to Jesus.  These people we may have only met one time – yet because we had shown the love of Jesus to them, their lives changed forever, and they won eternal life by accepting Christ as their Savior.  Don’t think your words don’t make a difference – they do.  Speak to them in love, always.  You may be the only way someone will ever see Jesus.
