Here Comes the Sun … And The Bugs
Ahh! It’s finally summer … Time to clean the grill and grab the pool toys! As the sun starts to set and the beautiful stripes of pink, red, yellow, and orange stretch throughout the western sky, the buzzing begins… followed by the bites, stings, swelling and horrible itch of the dreaded … MOSQUITO … Welcome to the bane of a Southern summer. These insects seem to appear out of nowhere and disappear before you can attempt revenge. Now, yes, you can grab your nearest can of bug spray to drench your skin in unknown and smelly chemicals. Or, you can grab your pre-mixed bottle of essential oil based bug spray!
In all fairness, yes, it is easier to just get a bottle of bug spray. But what if you can make it yourself? What if you get to pick the combination of scents? What if you can even add personalized protection against the sun?
Let’s start with the basic insect repellant. Your base: fractionated coconut oil. Now, you can use any oil, but this tends to be the least scented and least expensive of the ones available. As far as the oils … there are a lot of brands of oil available. I recommend whichever one is most available and in your price range, but I tend to use doterra.com or youngliving.com. Most commonly, lemongrass, cedar, and rosemary are going to be your go to oils. You can also use citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus, geranium, and/or lavender.
Simply mix these ingredients into a small spray bottle and you’re good to go! Just remember that a little bit goes a long way when working with essential oils. If you don’t have any coconut oil, you can also substitute witch hazel, as well. A couple extra side notes: if you get bit by a mosquito, dab some lavender or tea tree oil on it as quickly as possible and as often as needed! Both are great for inflammation and soothing damaged skin.
If you want to make your new solution dual purpose, buy some zinc oxide powder and make it into a creamy suntan lotion that repels those nasty bugs! Keeps the bugs and harmful rays away from your delicate skin. You can buy zinc oxide powder online (amazon.com has great prices) and I usually use a little over 2 TBSP, which equates to roughly 15 SPF. And now you’re off and ready to enjoy the start of your summer!
