Gratitude Ensures Your Happiness by Bonnie Gortler

The holiday season comes and goes each year, however it’s a time for reflection you can do at any time.  The spirit of “cheer” and “thanks giving” holds principles that carry us throughout the year and can be celebrated daily. Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude and the act of showing appreciation – which translates into “giving thanks”. Adding the practice of daily thanks allows for focused reflection will enable you to see how wonderful life really is. Being thankful on a routine basis can bring about an abundance of confidence, love, and joy into your life. Gratitude is the glue that paves the way to happiness.

It may appear to be an easy transition when we reach out to give thanks to others. Remember that you matter too and it’s just as important to give thanks to yourself as well. Sharing is caring; and when we feel good it is easier to lift up the spirits of others and be supportive of their needs. The love and patience you give yourself will create a compassionate and genuine heart that will always be remembered as you continue to touch others in a spirit of appreciation. Why not start today by telling someone “thank you” or by sharing a simple “I appreciate you” just to see what happens. One kind word of encouragement you give can make a huge difference in someone’s life. You never know what others may be going through and how your kindness can impact the life of another. Gratitude has taught me to compassion for others because I was compassionate to myself. Yes, there are times when I may I mess up and slip into the old habit of being too hard on myself by expecting perfection even though I understand without a doubt that I (or anyone for that matter) have never been “perfect”. Have you ever been there and put excessive pressure on yourself? It’s a lot to carry. It is helpful to remember that striving for excellence is different than perfection because you understand that all that matters is that you did your very best. You carry a message in your heart that’s worth sharing and when you do others can’t help but be grateful because you were open to sharing your gifts. Learn to become courageous enough to realize and applaud the inspiration you are. Take the time to love yourself, love others, and be to be in a constant attitude of gratitude. Once you put daily gratitude into practice you will feel a sense of confidence that will bring about a happier you and will add more serenity and tranquility into your life.

  1. If you feel a bit overwhelmed, stop, don’t wallow in what’s not working and your negative thoughts that are coming up in your monkey mind. Think of a positive thought that makes you feel better.
  2. If you want to accomplish more, do your best to relax. The more you press, the longer something will take you to accomplish.
  3. If you are frustrated or irritated, don’t become impatient with yourself and stay in a place where you are irritated for too long. Ask yourself, how can I simplify what I want to do? If you are continuously irritated, think kindness, and have compassion for others. Notice the difference in how much better you feel and the other person will too.
  4. Surround yourself with people who you trust and support you.
  5. Learn how to accept feedback, instead of taking what is said personal. This is what will inspire you to action and achieve what you desire.
  6. Remember, there is always a choice. Decisions that you make, create the lifestyle you live. Decide today to choose what gives you happiness and a feeling of all is well.
  7. Feel your emotions, manage them, and don’t stuff them down. Stop, take a breadth, don’t hold them inside your body, and let them go.
  8. Be compassionate, send your love, a smile or a hug and create a different feeling that brings more joy and peace within. Others will also feel your energy when you are around them.
  9. Have a good laugh with a friend today; laughter is good for the soul.
  10. Do one activity today for you. Go for a walk, call a friend you haven’t spoken to, schedule a massage, buy yourself a present, or read a book. What’s important is to do something for you.
  11. Be aware of the power of your words that you say or tell yourself. Focus your thoughts on what you want and not thoughts of what you don’t want. (A law of attraction principle)
  12. Celebrate small wins, each success that you have and write them down. Experience and achieve your dreams with more joy and happiness.
