Exposing The Darkness by Dottie Coffman

Exposing The Darkness by Dottie Coffman

Some years back I caught the end of a show called “DOC” on TV.  You may remember that show.  Besides the fact that Billy Ray Cyrus was sooo cute and utterly charming to watch, I really liked the themes and messages in his shows.  At the end of every show, he was shown writing an email to someone back home and telling him what he has learned that day (or episode).

This particular show he actually quoted scripture in Ephesians 5.  The episode was concerning one of the nurses being mugged and then, after much agonizing thought, subsequently helping to identify or catch the criminal.  Billy Ray was telling how in Ephesians Paul writes about the deeds done in darkness and that they should be exposed.  He commented that in these days too much goes on and good citizens just walk away, turn their backs, don’t stand up for what is right.

As Christians, we are not to let the dirty deeds go.  Christ didn’t.  Read the Old Testament through sometime and find out that God punished the Israelites over and over and over again because of their disobedience.  He forgave, He loved, He gave them every chance to get it right, but yet they continued to return to their sinful ways.

The ‘good guys’ so often turn away; pretend they don’t see.  “We don’t want any trouble.”  “We don’t want to get involved.”  “We don’t want to talk negative about anyone.”   But the ‘good guys’ need to step up and reveal the deeds of darkness so the deeds can be dealt with, punished, not happen again.

I realize that this is not as black and white as I seem to make it.  There are lots of interfering factors.  I understand those factors and have been faced with those.  But all in all, the bottom line is, we as Christians have remained seated too long when we should have been standing up for the truth.  Will we have to take some “heat” for it?  Yes.  Will there be time and energy expended?  Yes.  Will there be some that won’t understand?  Yes.

I would rather be on the side of truth, light and right, than in that hole with my head buried in the sand.   After awhile, the sand caves in and smothers me ….

Read Ephesians 5:8-14….

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth, and find out what pleases the Lord.  Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.  For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.  But everything exposed by the light becomes visible for it is light that makes everything visible.”
