05 May Embracing My Southern Roots by Brittany Nelson
Last year my mom gifted me a subscription to Southern Living magazine. I have loved flipping through the pictures of the cute houses, fancy gardens, seasonal designs, and yummy-looking recipes.
Most of the time, however, after daydreaming about having a wrap-around porch, I find myself putting aside the magazine and forgetting to cook the recipes or make the decorations.
Then a few months ago, after reading the 50th-anniversary issue of Southern Living, I was inspired to embrace my southern roots. What gave me the final push was reading testimonials from women who had been reading the magazine since they were my age and have now mastered the art of southern hospitality. Each month they make all the recipes in the magazine and some even have a girl’s night where each lady makes one of the dishes. These recipes have become their go-to’s for family gatherings and hosting friends. I realized that this way of living truly embraces family and friendship and is something I want to strive for in my life. I may be living up north, but I can still bring a little bit of the south into my home!
Over the next few months, I’m going to learn about things I find in the magazine: cooking, baking, decorating, designing, and more. I’ll share with you my insights and fun things I discover along the way with blogs and pictures. In the meantime, let me know in the comments below about your favorite recipes, family traditions, and advice you have learned during your own journey. It’s time for some southern living!
