It Took A Squirrel by Brenda Bonogofsky

It Took A Squirrel by Brenda Bonogofsky

Have you ever just stopped to watch the animals around us? Have you ever thought that God could be speaking to you through them? We have a squirrel feeder in our tree and we often fill it with nuts. I don’t know if you have a squirrel in your yard, but I can tell you they get very upset if the feeder is empty.

One day my husband, John, was coming out of the house and a squirrel was right there just letting him know that the feeder needed to be filled. John said, “Yes, I know. I will get you some nuts.” Right after that the squirrel went up the tree and found something to knock down on top of my husband’s head. We laughed so hard. I could just see the squirrel saying, “This is just to remind you to get my nuts.” Lol

Another day I was watching two squirrels fighting in our yard. They sure were going at it since one of the squirrels had a nut. Suddenly, a third one came running across the lawn. When the two stopped fighting, one of them headed to the neighbor’s yard – off to fight some more.

I believe that we can learn life lessons from the animals all around us.

The Lord started talking to me about what I was seeing with these squirrels. Have there been times in your life when time with the Lord seems impossible? Life gets so busy that we just can’t find the time to spend with the Lord. With work, family and all the activities we have in a day, something gets left out. God speaks to us all the time, but we usually don’t have our ears open to hear him.

God will use whatever he can to get us to hear him. That squirrel chattering to my husband was trying to get his attention. ‘You have been forgetting something.’ God opened my eyes to see that I have been forgetting to spend time with him. Oh yes, I speak to God each day in prayer. But what God wants is more than just a prayer here or there, but quality time with him.

Those squirrels fighting reminded me of the devil. Satan is always trying to keep us busy doing other things. The more focused we are on other things, the less time we have for our relationship with God. In Numbers 22:1–35, God used a donkey to speak to Balaam. In Jonah chapters 1-2 God used a big fish to open Jonah’s eyes.

I have to say that watching the squirrels in my yard is opening my eyes to what I have been allowing to keep me busy and not being focused on God.

What is God using to open your eyes?
