My Change of Life by Brenda Bonogofsky

My Change of Life by Brenda Bonogofsky

In 2004 my life changed.  God led me to John, the man that would soon be my husband.  We dated only for a short time before we knew we wanted to marry.  The funny thing was – I had always said I would not marry someone in the military.  Now here I was planning on marrying someone in the Air Force.  John soon learned he was high on the list for overseas duty. His Supervisor indicated we may want a private ceremony before the formal wedding in December, otherwise, John would head overseas alone.  We did have a private ceremony and, as it turned out, it was a blessing in disguise.

Four days before our wedding I fell going down some steps, dislocated both kneecaps, and ruptured both patella tendons.  Not what any bride wants just before her wedding, but it did not stop me from walking down that aisle – with immobilization braces from hip to ankle.  God was so good to me – I was able to stand for the entire ceremony, even during all the photos.

For the next three and half years, I was bedridden and endured 7 knee surgeries.  The doctors were not sure if I would ever walk again. At best, I may need to use a walker the rest of my life.  I kept telling them – and myself – that God was going to see me through this.  I will walk again one day. Many days I felt like giving up; asking God, “Why did this happen?” His gentle answer was “I have things for you to do, do not give up.  I am here and will get you through this.”

Amid those bedridden days, I decided to get closer to God and went back to school, attaining my Bachelor Degree in Biblical Studies.  I never imagined I could do that, but God provided the time during my recovery. After years of physical therapy, I am happy to say, I now walk without any assistance.  Praise the Lord!!

Why am I sharing this?  I believe you may be going through really difficult times and feel like giving up.  Perhaps you are wondering like I did, “Where is God,” and “Why is this happening?”

I want to encourage you – with God all things are possible.  God is right there with you and when you reach out to him, He will show you what you need to do.   I know how hard it is to pull yourself up some days, but I urge you to look in the mirror and say, “God’s got this!”

Mark 9:23 Jesus said, “If? There are no ‘ifs’ among believers.  Anything can happen.”

Hebrews: 11:1Now faith is the confidence of things hoped for, and the testimony of things not yet seen.

PS: As God promised, He has provided a wonderful outreach opportunity for me to minister to those less fortunate people in my community.
